Banned Book Week 22-28 September 2013 - Come Liberate a book or two from our "Book Jail"

This week, 22-28 September, is national Banned Book Week. The American Library Association has lists, lots of lists, of the top 10 most frequently challenged books in any one year - 2012, 2011, 2010 and the entire list back to 2001. They also have lists of the most challenged books by decade 1990-1999 and 2000-2009

There's this terrific interactive 30 year time-line too.

The Music & Curriculum Library does an annual display... this year we're inviting you to come visit and set a book free from our Book Jail ... If you can, maybe even intercept the "Paddy Wagon" as it carts the books off to the pokey.

We have print-outs of the banned book lists... feel free to pick one up and read a banned book this week.

If you're interested in our exhibits from the last couple of years, you can see them here for
2012 and 2011

(Kudos to Intern Jennifer Meixelsperger for running with the idea presented and to Sarah Reynolds for the idea of the book jail... and come look for more pictures later in the week... Sarah is working on a bulletin board today!)

What's going on in Music & Curriculum?

Welcome back to campus! Quite a few things have changed over the summer.

Loan periods for Curriculum materials now match those in the rest of the Libraries, 28 days for undergraduates, semester for graduate students, and academic year for faculty.

Renewal limits have changed for CDs - it is now 4 renewals for all UWM ID holders.

Our physical space changed a bit as well... the reference shelves are gone on the Curriculum side, the new books are now on stacks in the back on your way to the fire exit and we added two entire ranges of shelving on the Music side!

We had an exhibit celebrating Tomie DePaolo's birthday on the16th

And - in case you didn't know, we have an Ellison Die Cut machine that is available for anyone to use

(Thanks to Curriculum/Music student assistant Sarah Reynolds for her *terrific* bulletin boards!)

You may have heard that we're giving away LPs! Next week is the book sale and we'll be moving the carts upstairs for that, but over the weekend and then again after stop by and browse. There's some great stuff!
