New Display for the Summer - In Memoriam

2012 seems to have seen an inordinately large number of deaths of people in Music and Children's Literature...

So for the summer, the Music & Curriculum Library will have a display of materials by, and about, these remarkable people.

A few examples - in classical music we have lost conductor Gustav Leonhardt and Baritone Dietrich Fischer Diskau. Popular musicians Levon Helm, Doc Watson, Whitney Huston, Donna Summer, Barry Gibb, and Adam Yauch have all left us too early - regardless of their age, it's always too soon.

In Children's literature of course, we all mourn the loss of Maurice Sendak (see the previous blog entry), but Leo Dillon, Rosa Guy, and Jan Berenstain have all been taken from us this year too.

As you'll see in the pictures below, woven in among the photos & obituaries, books, scores, and sound recordings is a roll call of others that have died so far in 2012. Please come by and take a look.

Really Cool New Things in the Arts

1- The BBC and Arts Council of Britain have created an inter-arts space as part of the Cultural Olympiad that brings together streaming theatre, film, dance, music and more. You can watch a South African theatre troup perform Venus and Adonis at the Globe Theatre, Ridley Scott's first film Boy and Bicycle, or take a tour through John Peel's record collection. http://thespace.org/
Best of all... It looks as though most, if not all, of the content is available worldwide!

2- An iPad app to learn about Leonardo's anatomy drawings... This looks amazing. It isn't free, but it's pretty inexpensive... Produced by Touch Press for the Royal Collection, also known as The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace Details http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/news/leonardo-app or at Touch Press's site http://www.touchpress.com/titles/leonardo-da-vinci-anatomy/

3- Bill Barclay, who is in residence at UWM for part of this spring, writing music for Rebecca Holderness's production of Chekhov's Three Sisters, is working his way through Shakespeare, reading it aloud in public spaces. He recently read part of Romeo & Juliet from one of the Second Folios owned by the UWM Libraries' Special Collections. Bill's website is here http://www.shakespearealoud.com/
