What's in our Sneak Peek Case?

Banned Book week is coming.
But it's not a new phenomenon, nor is it just books! Come visit our peep-show case and see what's inside.

All of the titles in the case represent a story, a recording, or a person that has been challenged in some way over time. Some people were arrested, others banned from telling their stories through music. Other stories have raised concern for nearly a millennium.

The list includes the author (performers & composers are authors too!), the title, and the call number from the UWM Music Library collection. A link to the pdf is at the bottom of the page.

Here are a few examples of what you'll see.

Smith, Patti. Horses
Z AMY 5050

Strauss, Richard. Salome/Elektra

Grushkin, Paul and Dennis King. Art of modern rock : the poster explosion

UW System Borrowing & PantherCat to have some downtime

The UW System will be going through an upgrade of the joint catalog system and UW System borrowing will be unavailable for most of August.

PantherCat (UWM's catalog) is expected to be in 'read only' mode from 7-9 Aug.

You'll be able to search for books, but the item-availability status may be incorrect since the database can't be updated to reflect currently checked out materials during this period. You also will not be able to renew any materials.

Full details are available at the Libraries' website http://www4.uwm.edu/libraries/News/panthercat_upgrade12.cfm

PLEASE NOTE: The Library, including the Music & Curriculum Library will be open. You may still check out and return materials.

New Display for the Summer - In Memoriam

2012 seems to have seen an inordinately large number of deaths of people in Music and Children's Literature...

So for the summer, the Music & Curriculum Library will have a display of materials by, and about, these remarkable people.

A few examples - in classical music we have lost conductor Gustav Leonhardt and Baritone Dietrich Fischer Diskau. Popular musicians Levon Helm, Doc Watson, Whitney Huston, Donna Summer, Barry Gibb, and Adam Yauch have all left us too early - regardless of their age, it's always too soon.

In Children's literature of course, we all mourn the loss of Maurice Sendak (see the previous blog entry), but Leo Dillon, Rosa Guy, and Jan Berenstain have all been taken from us this year too.

As you'll see in the pictures below, woven in among the photos & obituaries, books, scores, and sound recordings is a roll call of others that have died so far in 2012. Please come by and take a look.
