The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records ! You're invited!

The UWM Music Library has been gifted with a remarkable addition - both volumes of the Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, which are historically significant collections that document the record company headquartered in Grafton, WI. 

We are having a small celebration to thank our donors this Friday, 4th December 2015 at 4pm in room E-281 just off the Music Library.

To accompany the event, Sylvia Yang - the Music Library Intern - has put together a display showing a little of what we already have in the collection that is related - books about and recordings of the artists who were part of Paramount Records... come browse the display in advance... but please join us on Friday afternoon!

 

Come count with us! New display hi-lights the math-related books in the Curriculum Collection

The Curriculum Collection has a broad range materials for a broad range of users... math texts for kids, fun counting books for younger ones, math in science for the older ones. Come take a look! 

Student worker Sarah Reynolds and SOIS Fieldwork student Stevie Curl have created a terrific display to whet your appetite.

 

New Displays for the start of School!

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year! 

To get you all started this year we have FOUR new displays. 


The first one is from the Curriculum Collection about emotions - always in a heightened state as school begins, with a selection of books to help you think about them (we have copies of the bibliography on the shelf, come pick one up!)

The Second looks at pop musicians who have played Milwaukee over the years. The idea stems from a fairly new book by Larry Wyden called Milwaukee Rock & Roll and includes books and recordings from our collection with photos of the artists performing here in Milwaukee.

Third, we have a minimalist celebration of John Cage with a look at the 'score' to his piece Indeterminacy: 90 Stories 

And last, but not least, the Libraries' Exhibits Committee as installed a display in the cases in the grind that celebrate both Hispanic Heritage Month (15 Sept-15 Oct) and Classical Music Month (September) by hi-lighting Classical music by Hispanic composers that can be found in the UWM Music Library.

A visit from the Slovenian Ambassador!

On Monday, 14 September 2015, the Slovenian Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Božo Cerar, visited the UWM Libraries as part of a visit arranged by the UWM Slovenian Arts Council.

He stopped by the Music Library to learn about the diverse collection of Slovenian music materials that we have and then was given a tour of the American Geographical Collection Library. All of this was followed by a reception at which we heard a UWM Student play a Slovenian tune on the violin.

A display of photographs of buildings by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) - a lecture about his works will be given at 4:30pm on Friday, 25th September at the School of Architecture & Urban Planning

An exhibit of materials from the AGSL's collection was laid out as well.

Dr Cerar turned out to be a rare book & map enthusiast and was in his element in the vault looking at all of the amazing things held by the AGSL

We were joined by Provost Britz as well.

Erc Ash, winner of the Slovenian Arts Council scholarship in 2014-15 played for us.

Dr Cerar examined the facsimile map he was given very closely.

Dr Cerar challenged us to find something in the collection about the 19th Century Slovenian Bishop Baraga who had been to what is now Wisconsin... and lo and behold, right in the front case was a map that marked the territory he was in!
